Hyperborea was founded in late March 2000 by two veteran micronationalists, Adam Stone and Scott Siskind, who were disturbed at the trend toward despotism in their former home country of Audentior. They established the country as a refuge for those in a similar predicament, and based it on a strong monastic-like code of truthfulness and neutrality. Hyperborea prospered, getting around ten citizens and some nice incidentals like a website, a language, a forum, and even its own newspaper, the Echo. The most important political achievement of the period was the codification of the High Laws, which were later modified beyond recognition, and the first few meetings of the Council. We also became active in the international community and were recognized as an integral part of the Apollo Sector of micronations. In keeping with our ideal of peace and unity, Hyperborea joined up with three other nations to merge into New Audentior, which we hoped would be a chance to rectify the mistakes that nation had made in the past. Around this time, our first Elder, Adam Stone, departed, and Scott Siskind was given the leadership position, which he has held ever since. Audentior ended up tearing itself apart from internal strife, and Hyperborea chose to throw its lot in with the largest of the former Audente provinces, Jasonia. We had a long and peaceful but not particularly productive time there until we felt ourselves ready to become independent once again, at which point Jasonia agreed to let us depart. The new independent Hyperborea was quickly joined by Ryan Caruso, who built up the offlying Isle of Volsung into a distinctive and vibrant community. With Ryan's help, and that of a number of others, Hyperborea once again grew into a flourishing country, achieving membership in both the League of Micronations and the League of Secessionist States. Having modified its neutral position, Hyperborea also joined with its long-time friend Shireroth in the Commonwealth of Benacia. When the Commonwealth started to grow into a full merge, Hyperborea supported the move, and became a Duchy under the new Hegemony of Alexandros. Alexandros itself was quickly gobbled up by the even larger Tymaria, in which Hyperborea became one of about ten new states. A catastrophic eruption of Mt. Yaanek severely weakened the nation around this point, however, and Hyperborea, noting the waxing power of its friend Shireroth, petitioned to the Tymarian government to be transferred there as a Barony. Hyperborea was annexed to Shireroth as a part of the Duchy of Elwynn. In January 2004, its position with Elwynn was switched around, making it a full Duchy, a distinction it keeps to this day.
